New developments in Vancouver’s Chinatown leave residents concerned about heritage

Nathan Edelson, former Vancouver city planner, says it'd be a 'mistake' to let Chinatown get wiped out.

A former Vancouver city planner says he believes it's important to preserve "every brick and stone in the community" of Chinatown while accommodating growth in the area.

Nathan Edelson said he believes the fate of Chinatown is not just an issue for the Chinese community or those who live in the neighbourhood.

In its place, a new development will be built that includes social and rental housing, along with some retail space.

"It sucks," said Dominic Lai, speaking on behalf of the store.

"The Chinatown that we have now looks a bit like Chinatown, it feels like Chinatown, you see people walking around, but by no means is it the Chinatown I remember from before." Read more…
